Overlooking Loch Harport

Isle of Skye

Clients Julie & Terry

April 1, 2020

Background
Terry and Julie reside on the picturesque Isle of Skye, part of the Inner Hebrides, overlooking Loch Harport. While the views are breathtaking, the weather poses significant challenges. Wind speeds can reach up to 100mph (161kph), capable of uprooting cauliflowers and causing substantial damage. Coupled with high rainfall, low temperatures, and limited winter daylight, growing vegetables in such conditions demands a sturdy and durable greenhouse.

Decision and Purchase
Given these harsh conditions, Terry and Julie realised they needed a reliable solution. Their research quickly led them to the Keder Greenhouse. "Keder Greenhouse has been around for over 25 years, and there are lots of them in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England," Terry remarked. "Importantly, many are on our island and across other Scottish Isles like Orkney and Shetland."

A fellow Skye resident’s endorsement solidified their decision: “In all the weather we have had up here, other types of greenhouses and polytunnels only last a year or so, but my Keder Greenhouse is very solid and stable; it has not moved,” he said. This confirmation convinced Terry and Julie that Keder was the right choice.

Preparation and Installation
Preparing the site took about a year due to the presence of a burn (stream) and uneven ground. After adding base material, rubble, and topsoil, the site was ready. In February 2020, they ordered a 3m wide x 6m long Keder Greenhouse with side staging and an automatic roof vent. Despite COVID-19 causing delays, Keder HQ kept them well-informed, and by mid-April, the greenhouse was on its way.
By early May, the greenhouse was built. “As a former gas engineer, I can turn my hand to most things, so I decided to build it myself. The instructions were clear, and all parts were labelled and easy to identify. We started on a Friday and completed it by Tuesday, slightly delayed due to the weather,” Terry explained.

Quality and Performance
Terry was impressed by the greenhouse’s quality and construction. “It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design and manufacture of these products. That’s why it’s so strong and durable and will last us a lifetime. I know I made the right choice,” he said.

Horticultural Benefits
Two months in, Terry and Julie’s greenhouse is thriving. Their crops are progressing excellently. To streamline their gardening, they installed an automatic watering system with a feed pipe, hosing, a timer, and two sensors, enhancing the ease and enjoyment of their gardening experience.

Customer Experience
Terry commended the Keder team: “They are great, a nice family business that cares. Really helpful, knowledgeable, and informative.” The combination of superior product quality and exceptional customer service underscored their positive experience.

Conclusion
Terry and Julie’s Keder Greenhouse has proven to be an invaluable addition to their Isle of Skye home, providing a robust and reliable growing environment in the face of extreme weather. Their experience highlights the importance of quality engineering and supportive customer service in choosing a greenhouse that meets the demands of a challenging climate.
